The United Nations has built a Peace Memorial to commemorate Ban Ki-moon's contributions during his ten years in office.
From August 17-19, 2018, the dedication ceremony of the Ban Ki-moon Memorial Was held in Seoul, South Korea. To celebrate the opening of the Ban Ki-moon Memorial, nearly 1,000 guests from around the world arrived at the Ban family's former residence in Seoul. In his speech, Mr. Ban ki-moon said that the dedication of the memorial received warm attention from friends all over the world.
On December 6, 2018, the Peace Memorial for Ban Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, was opened. Located in Eumseong county, the hometown of former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the 2,800 square meter museum has a cultural center, a virtual experience hall for the Model United Nations General Assembly, a lecture hall, an outdoor performance stage, and a conference room to display souvenirs and materials related to the United Nations donated by Ban from around the world.
"I want the Peace Memorial to be a place of education that helps young people become citizens of the world," Ban said.
More than 300 people including the Embassies of Austria, Kuwait and Tanzania attended the opening ceremony. Ban also gave a special lecture at In-sung High School under the theme of "The United Nations and leadership in the 21st Century," encouraging students to learn how to contribute and make the world a better place.
Antonio Guterres, current UN Secretary-General, said: "I am delighted to attend the opening of the Peace Memorial in memory of my esteemed predecessor and friend Ban Ki-moon. What a life story to grow up in war-torn North Korea and lead the world organization at a time when it needed help most. Ban ki-moon used what he learned in his hometown to serve the world. With passion and compassion, he has led the United Nations to focus global attention on the challenge of climate change, developed a new blueprint for sustainable development and has been an advocate for the silently disadvantaged. I have no doubt that in the years ahead, this Peace Memorial will help people understand Ban Better and encourage them to continue with his mission to build a better world for all."
